Recently we had a fire scare in our office building. If you know Portland, then you know November rain is cold and no one wants to be unexpectedly standing in it watching their building burn down. Luckily for us, all were evacuated and four fire trucks showed up within 10 minutes of the alarm sounding off. And, we received the “all clear” about 30 minutes later.
This was a startling and yet extremely comforting fire drill, especially since all outcomes were positive. We enacted our Disaster Plan protocol and hence, realized how secure we really were. Part of our protocol allowed us to remotely shut our computers and servers down. Our two offsite servers were 100% functional, so no loss or breach of content occurred for our business or our clients’ content. Each employee reported to their secured, remote work stations and was able to continue their work.
We realized that our worst-case scenario after this event would only be that we all worked remotely until we had an office to return to. All-in-all it was a great lesson on disaster preparedness and why it’s so important to have a protocol to follow in any case of emergency.
